Northern trip is a success

Orono girls hockey goes up north and captures two wins.

The Orono girls hockey team have been on roller coaster for the past week. Starting on Nov. 15 the girls went up for their annual northern trip to play Duluth and Silver Bay.

“It was good for us to have some quality bonding time at the beginning of the season,” senior Katherine Spurlock said. After making the three hour trip, the girls took on Duluth (3-1-0). The girls were strong out of the gates, lead by junior Ellie Martini, who finish the night with a hat trick.

“I just kept getting fed form the corners from the forwards and utilized the opportunity to put [the puck] in the net.” Martini said. Senior Becky Smith and junior Haley Nielsen helped add on to Martini’s three.

The next day the team went up to Silver Bay but before hitting the ice, the girls went to see what the north shore had to offer.

“We went on our annual nature walk out to a lighthouse which was so peaceful and gave us more time together,” senior Madison Martini said.

After the walk, the Spartans rolled into Silver Bay and did not look back. The Spartans netted seven goals and went on to shutout Silver Bay and win big, 7-0.

“It was nice to get two wins up north,” said senior Becky Smith. “It is a good team bonding trip for early in the year and the hotel stay and noisy bus rides are always fun.”

The Spartans will play AA powerhouse, Hopkins at home on Nov. 19.
