Tuesday May 17, A federal investigation into the Amtrak 188 derailment that killed eight people and injured more than 200 in Philadelphia last year has concluded and brought new information to light into the cause of the crash. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have now concluded that the train’s engineer, Brandon Bostian, was distracted prior to the crash by radio communication with other trains and dispatchers about other trains being hit by flying projectiles.

According to CNN, NTSB investigators say they found no evidence the Amtrak engineer was using alcohol, drugs or a cell phone. The ride from the train station in Philadelphia to the site of the derailment was 11 minutes. Investigators say seven to nine of those minutes the engineer was listening to and participating in the radio conversations regarding other trains being hit with a projectile.

NTSB investigators said there is good circumstantial evidence to make the case that the radio chatter is what distracted Bostian when he approached a 50 mph curve at 106 mph.

Thursday May 19, EgyptAir flight 804 from Paris to Cairo disappeared off the radar over the Mediterranean Sea with 66 people on board early Thursday morning. The plane reached Cairo airspace then took a 37,000 foot drop into the water. Investigators are still unsure whether the plane went down due to mechanical issues or if it was an act of terrorism, but officials aren’t ruling anything out.

Aviation experts are expecting to see debris within the next 12 to 18 hours hoping they will find proof of a plane crash. Greek officials have said that the Egyptian Military may have spotted debris roughly 210 nautical miles southwest of Crete, but they cannot be sure that they are parts off of the missing plane.

Search and rescue operations are in effect.
