On May 24th, the Orono Boys Tennis team won the 5AA Section against Wayzata 4-3 at Wayzata High School. This victory was a welcomed surprise because Orono had previously lost 5-2 to Wayzata on May 4th at Orono High School. Wayzata had never lost a match before that day. This victory for the Spartans means that the Orono Boys Tennis team is moving on to the state championship tournament, which will occur in two weeks.
“My favorite moment was definitely the final point when I beat Wayzata’s two singles. After I served the ball out wide and he missed, all my teammates went crazy and they poured water on me and everything,” senior Sam Skanse said when asked about his favorite part of the match, “Easily the best moment of the season, and it sent us to state!”
“We are so happy to get Wayzata out of the way,” Skanse said, “We knew they would be our biggest roadblock and we took them down.”
Orono also got first and third in doubles, which only helped the team further to get them to the state tournament.
“The job is not finished though and we are still going to keep focused and work hard to perform our best in state!” Skanse said.
The 5AA state Boys Tennis tournament is in two weeks at the University of Minnesota, so make sure to attend and support the Spartans!
