On September 7, the Orono cross country team competed in the Ron Kretsch invitation. Taking place in Bassett Creek Park, the 38th annual Ron Kretsch invitational consists of a 2 mile race. The runners compete in their own age groups, each grade level having their own race.

The top seven scores of the team were combined and average to form the team score. The Orono girl’s sophomore team time was 13:51, earning them 26 points and first place for the meet. Minneapolis Washburn placed second with 34 points and a team average 14:13, and Mounds View placed third with 60 points and an average of 15:52.

Orono had three top-ten finishers in the race; Rivera Wock, Quincy Shelp, and Aby Denneson. Wock placed first in, finishing in 12:47. Shelp finished 4th with a time of 13:31. Denneson finished in 13:32, earning 5th place.

“It was really rocky in the beginning,” said sophomore Shelp, “and then we got to this race and were like ‘okay guys we got to do good’, and then we all pushed really hard and we made it and we were really surprised we won.”

The girls cross country team faces a tough competition with teams like Wayzata, Benilde St. Margaret’s, and many others. The team has three remaining meets until the state meet, including the Milaca Mega meet and the Litchfield invite.
