The Spartan Speaks

Iris Erickson, Copy Editor

Senior and copy editor, Iris Erickson, found her love for journalism her sophomore year, and has continued writing and editing since.  Erickson took a brief hiatus from The Spartan Speaks when she took part in a Rotary Youth Foreign Exchange trip to Stockholm, Sweden for her junior year.

Erickson loves Journalism and says that it has best prepared her for college and later in life. “[Journalism] has gotten me to look at the news more and criticize the media,” said Erickson, “Journalism has helped me look at things more ethically and has really improved my writing.”

Outside of The Spartan Speaks, Erickson works at Justice in the Ridgedale mall and participates in DECA and Speech.  Recently, Erickson qualified for the International Career Development Conference in Atlanta, Ga.

Erickson’s best activity, however, is sleeping. “I sleep a lot, sleeping is my favorite,” Erickson said.

Erickson takes advantage of her unique experiences while studying abroad when she writes her articles. “[Studying abroad] has really helped me with my writing; I’ve gone through a lot of things that others haven’t, I’ve gotten out of the ‘Orono Bubble’.”

After high school, Erickson plans on studying International Business at an undecided college, hopefully the University of Minnesota or Indiana University.

As she nears the end of her senior year, Erickson keeps motivated with graduation in sight. She said of her finals months of high school, “I’m ready to finish out strong and end this chapter of my life.”
