Girls Volleyball Sets Up for a Strong Season

The Orono Girls volleyball team is in full swing this fall. The team is led this year by senior captains Morgan Marxer, Olivia Scharf and Megan Anderson.  Their latest game was against the Holy Family Fire on Monday Oct. 10.  They came out with a win in five sets.

They have played a total of 12 games so far this season, with a record of 9-14 overall, and 2-2 in their Conference.  The other conference teams include: Waconia, New Prague, Delano, Hutchinson and Holy Family.

The final game of their regular season will be on Tuesday Oct. 18 against the Hutchinson Tigers.  Come to the Orono High School Gym at 7:00 p.m. to watch the game.  Thursday is also senior night for the volleyball team; the senior players will be recognized before the start of the game.

After graduating only four seniors last year, the Spartan team has a lot of returning varsity players.  The team consists of eight seniors, three juniors and one sophomore.  The varsity head coach, Rachel Thibault, is also returning for her third season coaching the Spartans.

“All the girls on the team are really close, and everyone plays their part during the game,” senior captain Olivia Scharf said.

Sections are fast  approaching for the volleyball team.  Their  game against the Tigers  will determine who they will face in the first round of sections.

“We are in a pretty tough section, but we’ve been practicing hard and fine-tuning things before sections,” Scharf said.
