Aspiring for greatness, senior Women’s Basketball player, Meghan Mandel, was the finalist in becoming the Aspire athlete of the week. As of Wednesday evening, she was in the lead with 551 votes and as of Friday, January 8, Mandel was the official winner with the most votes. Winning with 765 total votes, she really made the Orono School District proud.
The athlete of the week program was created by ASPIRE Beverage Company. This program recognizes and rewards inspiring athletes that strive for greatness in their athletics, academics, involvement in the community, and personal character. This program runs during the school year, and every week, three new semifinalists are nominated. By the end of the week, after receiving the most votes, a winner is chosen.
Mandel is averaging 10 points and as of Jan. 7, 2016 she has scored over 1,000 points for the Orono Women’s Basketball Team, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 1 steal per game. Along with her great GPA and heart for mentoring through the Give & Go Mentoring Program at Orono HS and the Unified Program, she is a fantastic candidate for the Aspire athlete of the week.
