NCAA Upsets

The annual NCAA basketball tournament has started again in Jacksonville, Florida. Every year there are many upsets, and this year already has many.

14 seed UAB defeated three seed Iowa State 60-59 in the first game of the tournament. William Lee scored the last four points to beat Iowa. This is the third year in a row that a 14 seed has defeated a three seed. UAB has not won a NCAA game since 2005 and is looking forward to move on and play UCLA.

11 seed UCLA defeats SMU by one point today and this was controversial. UCLA was down 59-57 with around ten seconds left in the game. Bryce Alford, a UCLA player, took a three point shot and the shot was deflected by SMU player, Yanick Moreira.

The shot looked like it was off, but the ref called “goaltending.” This is when the ball is above the ring and has a chance of going into the basket. According to the rules, it isn’t goaltending if it does not have a chance of going in. Many people have reviewed the clip and pictures and the majority agree that it was not going in.

UCLA ended up winning the game with Moreira believing it was his fault.

14 seeded Georgia State beat three seed Baylor with two seconds to go. R.J. Hunter hit a 30 foot three pointer to win the game for Georgia and his Dad got to experience the win with him because he is the coach. He took over as coach in 2011 and is more than excited to cause a huge upset.

In a previous game, coach Hunter celebrated too much on the court with his team and ruptured his achilles tendon. He had to sit on a chair for the next game. After R.J. made his shot, coach Hunter fell right out of this chair onto the court. Coach Hunter was a very proud Dad and coach. Georgia State will play Xavier.
