Word around the school, there is another anonymous twitter account:  @OronoDraft. This account trades students or things in Orono. The users are trying to get rid of people and trade them for other Orono students.

The account uses an ask.fm (a social media site that enables people to ask questions without the readers’ knowledge of who posted the question) account for people to give ideas to the creator(s) of OronoDraft.

“Some things tweeted are okay and encouraging compliments, but some of [the tweets] are [negative]” said junior Chris Lecy.

The account also mentions a couple of students more than once, and calls students or even classes out. In addition to addressing students, the account mentions subjects like sports, siblings and other schools.

“It made me feel bad about myself. If it’s your own class getting called out, it makes you feel even worse.” said junior Anthony Tavella.

“It’s mean. However, I’ve seen worse, but the comments are mean. It’s not what this community expects. Although it’s good to know that we have an immediate response,” said Orono High School’s Vice Principal Caryn Boyd.

The account was made Thursday Sept. 12, and was followed by many Orono students right away. The teachers found out about the account Friday morning at school.

“Orono is known for a school of character as of last school year and [the school] wants to keep it that way. This is not a good way to represent Orono since we are school of character,” said Lecy.

Although, not all of @OronoDraft tweets are bad, some give compliments to people and some aren’t as judgmental. “They mentioned me in one of their tweets and it made my day,” said senior Chandler Jacoby.

Other schools, such as Maple Grove and Benilde St. Margaret’s, also have an @(schoolname)Draft accounts that do the same thing.

“Orono is known as a school of character and good things, not for putting people down and making people feel bad.” said Boyd

Lately, there was a discovery of another twitter account, @Orono_Tweets with retweets from @OronoDraft and an ask.fm account. However, @Orono_Tweets doesn’t have as many followers as @OronoDraft.

@Orono_Tweets has been tweeting many nice and Orono related tweets, such as the football hashtags and positive tweets. The account is fairly new so their tweets aren’t as well known as @OronoDraft.
