Kindness for kindness’ sake

The dictionary defines kindness as “the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.” There are endless debates about whether humans are innately good or evil. Some believe that humans are naturally violent or aggressive, and kindness is a conscious choice, while others believe that humans are naturally good – that kindness is an innate characteristic, and perhaps even a survival skill.

This classic debate calls the genuine, selfless nature of acts of kindness and friendly personalities into question. Evolution is centered around the concept of ‘survival of the fittest’ or ‘natural selection,’ which states that only the strongest creatures in an environment will survive and those who cannot adapt will become extinct. While there are certainly other factors of strength and survival, likability is one that cannot be ignored.

Examples of this can be seen in countless environments and situations. Presidents will find it difficult to be elected if they are not likeable. Kids have less friends if they are mean and arrogant. A smile is considered the most attractive characteristic in both men and women. So again we ask, why are people kind?

At Orono, students, teachers and administration alike pride themselves on character, a pillar of which is kindness. Over four short years at the high school, a student is likely to experience many events organized to promote character, kindness and charitable giving.

Examples of this include Calc Cuts Cancer, the Polar Plunge, Empty Bowls, Orono Schools Against Hunger, and various food, clothing or toy drives. The majority of these events are organized and run by the high school students. Participation from the student body (and teachers) is incredibly high.

More evidence of the move to promote character in the schools are the numerous signs around the high school plastered with pictures of students and slogans such as “At Orono, everyone matters.” One morning, students arrived at school to find that everyone’s locker had been adorned with a paper reminder: “You Matter”.

These are, of course, wonderful things. Charitable giving is certainly worthy of promotion. However, if one wants to work towards making the world a better place, the first place he or she ought to start is at home, at school, the grocery store or the gym. Family, friends and random strangers in line at Target deserve to be treated with courtesy and kindness just as much as anyone else.

If a person has the motivation to start their own foundation or charity, but doesn’t have the decency to help their mom with the laundry or wish the cashier a good afternoon, something is not right.

Reaching out to those in need through acts of kindness will no doubt be beneficial in a number of ways. Popularity and public recognition may be wonderful perks, but kindness should happen simply for kindness’ sake.
