Orono plans summer trip to Panama.

Orono students have the opportunity to test their Spanish knowledge and language as 28 sophomores and juniors fly to Panama to spend two weeks with a host family and see where they stand in the Spanish world.

“I love the language and I wanted to go with my friends and family,” said junior Abby Aasen. “I wanted a chance to stay with a [Spanish] family.”  The students each gig assigned different host families and none of the students are with the same host family.

A challenging part of this experience will be the fact that for a majority of the two weeks students will have to speak nothing but Spanish. This is a major concern for most students as they are worried they will not be able to communicate with their family.

Host families were given out on Wednesday May 15. Each family has at least one child. “My family has one girl who is nine years old.” Said Aasen.

The trip begins on June 13 returning on the 26. Mr. Smalling will accompany the students on the trip.  Despite some nerves about the trip a majority of the students are excited for the great opportunity ahead of them.
