Monday April 7, marked the important day of Holocaust Remembrance Day. It has been nearly 70 years since the murdering of approximately 6 million Jews.

Most students in high school are taught about the horrific details of the Holocaust and Adolf Hitler in the 1930’s. However, not many extend their knowledge of the Holocaust beyond what they are taught in World History class. This day has been created to acknowledge the loss of others and to remind citizens across the world how important it is to take time and remember history.

The Holocaust was a time of extreme genocide that caused for a loss of over 6 million people. About 500,000 survivors still remain. A number of organizations are working to preserve the stories of those who were killed and those who survived to make sure that the memory of the Holocaust always prevails.

President Barack Obama gave a speech on this day to show and explain how important this day really is. Obama said, “On this Yom Hashoah, we must accept the full responsibility of remembrance, as nations and as individuals – not simply to pledge ‘Never again,’ but to commit ourselves to the understanding, empathy and compassion that is the foundation of peace and human dignity.”

Please take a few minutes to remember those who suffered and were killed, and give thought to the survivors who endured the terrible acts of the German Nazi’s.
