Orono Foundation makes significant contributions to school funding

All schools are funded annually by the state, but what most don’t know is that Orono has a private, non-profit organization: The Orono Foundation for Education.

The Orono Foundation, previously known as the Orono Alliance, was started in 2000 by a group of parents that saw a gap in Orono’s funding. In addition to the state’s funding, Orono receives $250,000 annually from the foundation. On top of that, if additional needs arise, the foundation steps in to help.

In the 2011-2012 school year, Orono received $450,000 from the foundation. In total, the district has received $4 million over the past 12 years.

The annual fund grant of $250,000 allows the district to have private equipment like mobile labs and iPads, as well as AP classes and more teachers for smaller classroom sizes.

Looking at the 2011-2012 school year, the additional $200,000 was used towards creating the World Language program for grades K-5 and initiating the 4-year teacher training program. It was also used towards the donor-directed grants, which provides scholarships and supports initiatives like anti-bullying and the nationally-recognized character education.

The school district is able to spend more money than what the state provides.

As of now, there are 18 board members and over 800 donors, which include parents, alumni, local businesses and community members that realize their investments in the district will benefit them in the future. On occasion, the foundation also receives memorial donations.

“Any parent can join, but we look for skill sets to fulfill the gaps so that we are balanced,” said Marketing and Administrative Coordinator Sheila Ross. “Right now we are looking for an event planner.”

Besides donations, the foundation raises money through large events like their annual gala that alone typically raises $100,000 towards the annual fund grant. This grant is given to the district to spend where they think it’s necessary. The foundation’s additional funds are decided by working closely with Orono’s superintendent, Karen Orcutt.

“Our partnership with the Orono Foundation for Education will strengthen the strategic efforts of the Orono School District’s vision,” said Orcutt.

The foundation has taken a step toward improving their communication with the community and alumni by changing their name, logo and website.

Many people don’t know the efforts the foundation has put forth towards improving the schools. “I only know that they donate money to us,” said junior Kenzie Shofner.

By changing their name from Alliance to Foundation they are more clearly communicating what they do. Their new logo is a leaf, which symbolizes growth. They’ve also updated their website, www.oronofoundation.org, so people can more easily stay involved.

Along with donations, the foundation also holds events, campaigns to raise money and makes direct phone calls.

Because of the Foundation’s efforts, Orono schools are able to excel as a privately funded public school.
