Forensic students welcome guest speaker to their classroom

Forensic Science is a new course offered at OHS available to junior and senior students. Forensics is the study of evidence left at a crime scene, which is later put to use in the court of law. This includes identifying fingerprints, analyzing blood spatter, and different forms of DNA that may help convict someone in court.

On Wednesday Sep. 19, the Forensic Science class had the privilege of welcoming in a guest to their classrooms. Officer David McNichols of the Orono Police Department volunteered his time to come in to the classes and explain what he does and just how much forensics are involved with being a police officer.

He gave examples of different scenarios that he had encountered over the years and asked the students how they would have handled them. Along with this, he explained different methods of identifying evidence and left plenty of time for Q&A with the students.

Officer McNichols visit was beneficial to the forensics students due to the fact that they were just about to begin their unit of fingerprint identification. McNichols has had 20+ years of experience in the field and was eager to answer any of the students questions.
