Candy, costumes, and competition took over OHS on Friday, October 31st, as the high school celebrated Halloween in style through a variety of Student Senate-sponsored activities.
From sports announcers to grandmas, chipmunks to Scooby-Doo, and more, OHS buzzed with excitement as students and staff showed off their Halloween spirit.
All English teachers, for example, donned costumes inspired by characters from Inside Out.
“I had the [unique] experience of several young people coming up in costume,” English teacher Mr. Williams said, who was dressed as Bing Bong from Inside Out. “I would say to them, ‘Who’s your friend who wants to play?’ And on several occasions, almost by Pavlovian conditioning, they started saying ‘Bing Bong, Bing Bong’ and in that moment they realized who I was dressed up as—so these moments were really fun.”

Those who wore costumes could “trick-or-treat” by going to a participating teacher’s classroom and asking for candy. Students could do this before school, during snack break, and at other passing times. This year, a total of 17 teachers joined in on the fun.
“My experience handing out candy was fantastic,” Williams said.
In addition, there was also a costume contest held during lunch. Students in each lunch who were wearing costumes could compete for titles such as Scariest Costume, Funniest Costume, and more.
Winners were determined by applause—the loudest cheers determined who took home each title.
“[I enjoyed the costume contest] because it shows that some people put a lot of time into a costume and now they have a physical item to show for that,” freshman Will Burak said.
To top off all the fun, a brand-new Halloween activity—the scavenger hunt— kept students searching high and low throughout the day. Twelve rubber ducks were hidden across the school. If students found one, they could bring it to Ms. Nohner to be entered into a drawing to win a $10 Starbucks gift card.
“The rubber duck hunt was a very fun activity,” senior Max Haugen, who located three of the twelve ducks, said. “I would be glad to partake in it again next year if I were still here. It was a great time.”
