    53rd Annual Grammy Awards – not the same old song

    It’s that time of year again–time for music lovers, young and old, of all genres and all artists to cheer on their favorites at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards.  The award show has been slated for Feb. 3.

    Among the nominations, there are several awards that are very highly contested.  The  award for Record of the Year will be fought out by B.o.B with the song “Nothin’ On You” feat. Bruno Mars, Eminem with the song “Love The Way You Lie” feat. Rihanna, Cee Lo Green with the song “Forget You,” Jay-Z and Alicia Keys with “Empire State of Mind,” and Lady Antebellum with “Need You Now.”

    Album of the Year will also be a highly contested.  Nominees include Arcade Fire for The Suburbs, Eminem for Recovery, Lady Antebellum for Need You Now, Lady Gaga for The Fame Monster, and Katy Perry for Teenage Dream.

    The songs “Forget You,” “Love the Way You Lie,” and “Need You Now,” have also been nominated for Song of the Year, along with “The House That Built Me” performed by Miranda Lambert, and “Beg, Steal, or Borrow,” by Ray LaMontagne and The Pariah Dogs.

    Justin Bieber, Drake, Florence & The Machine, Mumford & Sons, and Esperanza Spalding are the Nominees for Best New Artist.

    Eminem was the most nominated artist with his composers for his songs and albums.  Nominations include Pop Collaboration With Vocals for “Airplanes, Part II,” Best Rap Solo Performance for “Not Afraid,” Best Rap/Song Collaboration, Best Rap Song, and Best Short Form Music video for “Love the Way You Lie,” along with Best Rap Album.Not to mention the previously stated nominations. Eminem rounded off with nine nominations, though the awards also go to songwriters, producers, featured artists, and anyone else crucial to the recording process.

    Lady Antebellum pulled out several other nominations, including Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals, Best Country Song, and Best Country Album.  They were nominated for a total of six nominations.  Cee Lo Green was nominated for four awards with “Forget You,” including Best Short Form Music Video and Best Urban/Alternative Performance.

    B.o.B and Bruno Mars’ collaboration, “Nothin’ On You,” was nominated for three awards, in both Pop and Rap genres.

    Some more under-the-radar artists were also nominated for titles.  Arcade Fire, a premiering rock group, received two nominations for their album, The Suburbs.  Another newly promoted performer, La Roux, was nominated for two awards as well.

    The award for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical, had been a prestigious award for the best music producers, and this was also a tightly contested award this year.  Nominees include Rob Cavallo, who has produced tracks for Paramore, Meat Loaf, Uncle Kracker, Adam Lambert, and Green Day.  Dr. Luke, producer of tracks by Katy Perry, Adam Lambert, Ke$ha, and B.o.B was also nominated.  Also nominated were RedOne (Lady Gaga, Enrique Iglesias, Usher, Mary J. Blige and “We Are The World 25 For Haiti”) and The Smeezingtons (Travie McCoy, Mike Posner, Cee Lo Green, Sean Kingston, Bruno Mars, and B.o.B)

    The awards will air on Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. (Central Time)  from the Los Angeles Staples Center.  For a complete list of awards and nominees, check out Grammy.com.
