This past Monday, Student Senate announced that they would be starting a new “snowflake activity.” The members of Senate hung paper snowflakes along the halls, each with multiple names on them. The goal is for students to find a snowflake with their name on it, and then find all of the people on their snowflake. Students are then required to go to Mr. Lundquist’s room with the snowflake to prove that they completed the activity.

Member of the Senate and co-head of Student Voice, Ellie Melander played a key role in making the activity come to life.

“During one of our meetings, we pondered how we could further unify our student body and create a spirited week leading up to break. Our advisors mentioned that many years ago, student council wrote a single name on each snowflake and hung them throughout the school, it was a kind of metaphor showing our student body that everyone has a place at Orono\; that everyone is recognized,” senior Ellie Melander said.

Still, they wanted to make the activity a little more involved and fun.

“We then came up with the idea to make the activity more interactive by writing four names on each snowflake, one from each grade,” Melander said.

“Since it’s one person from every grade, you get to meet people from different grades and it brings the students together,” junior and fellow senator Ella Nordlie said.

The first group that comes to Mr. Lundquist’s room will get Caribou coffee delivered to their first hour. The remaining groups will be given a prize and will be entered into a drawing for the same thing.

This is the first time the Student Senate has done an activity like this, but Melander is convinced that with the success of the event, it will become a tradition at Orono.
