Seniors Take the W

Wednesday, Oct. 11 the hype for the much anticipated senior vs. junior Powderpuff football game actually began off the field, bright and early at school that day as seniors sported their black pinnies hoping to intimidate their rival younger class.

The annual powderpuff game has been an Orono homecoming tradition for many years, and the seniors were feeling the pressure of keeping the multiple year winning streak alive.  The game began with a performance of the national anthem from members of the OHS choir.

Both teams then took the field looking somewhat unorganized, and relying on direction from their coaches who are members of the Orono Varsity football team.  The first half score was a close game with only a one touchdown lead separating the seniors from the juniors.  However, it had been a controversial first half as one of the refs, Orono’s Doug Erickson, had made executive calls taking back two touchdowns for the seniors.

Boys from the senior class contributed to the game as the colorful commentators and both senior and junior boys filled the roles of cheerleaders for the evening providing spirited outfits, a kickline halftime show, and a daring pyramid attempt.

By the end of the second half the seniors had once again clinched the win over the juniors, to nobody’s surprise, and the juniors were left waiting for next year for the opportunity play against the grade below them and keep the senior winning streak alive for another year.
