Orono placed on AP Honor Roll

Orono Schools has always been known for excelling at academic pursuits and this year has earned its place on the AP Honor Roll. Orono Schools is now one of 11 public schools in Minnesota and one of 367 public schools in the nation to be featured on the list.According to Robert Tunheim, director on the Orono School board, Orono earned the prestigious award by “increasing the AP offerings quite a bit over the past five years while simultaneously increasing the percentage of passing scores.” The award has illuminated not only what an astounding job Orono students have done but the AP class teachers, as well.

AP Literature and Composition teacher Larry Williams commented on Orono earning the award. Williams stated that he is very excited and proud of the schools accomplishment, but he ultimately believes that he has fulfilled his true purpose as teacher when he is able to witness students foster or consider new perspectives. “It’s not the scores; it’s the cumulative and anecdotal broadening of horizons.”

Increasing the amount of AP classes has certainly allowed for broadening of horizons. Senior Sophia Sodhi, who is currently in 2 AP classes commented, “I really enjoyed taking AP Human Geography. The knowledge I learned in the course I can apply to a variety of careers I might potentially take.” She added that AP classes have taught her what to expect “for work load in a typical college class and how to think on a higher level.”

Senior Rachiel Kennen is taking AP Psychology this year said it is her favorite class. “The course is so unique. It’s hard, but very logical. It’s been so interesting to find out the reasons behind why people do things,”  stated Kennen.

“My favorite class is AP Calculus, because I can now derive anything I set my heart to and, of course, because Mrs. Swenson is so awesome,” stated senior Ben Engler, who is also involved in a variety of AP courses. All students interviewed agree that the teachers at OHS have really gone above and beyond, as Sodhi did state, “Our teachers rock!”

Since 2009, OHS increased the number of students taking in AP exams from 193 to 252 and increased the percentage of students passing the test from 77 percent in to 83 percent. This is an exciting and impressive statistic; seeing the teachers and students excel at maximizing learning is quite excellent indeed.

“We are gratified that our hard work has paid off and has been recognized by The College Board,” stated Superintendent of Orono Schools Dr. Karen Orcutt.  “Over time, we have set – and achieved – goals to increase academic rigor for all students but particularly at the high school.

Working as a team, our talented teachers and administrators have embraced opportunities to encourage students to maximize their learning.  Our communities know Orono Schools to be extraordinary and this recognition puts a nationwide spotlight on the fine work we are doing here with students,” added Orcutt.
