The development of yoga can be traced back as yearly as 5,000 years ago. Over the years, a variation of differentiating styles have emerged. Today, one of the most popular forms of yoga is sculpt. In summary, sculpt is a class that incorporates hand weights, a core workout, and high-intensity cardio bursts. The inclusion of these vital elements maximize the amount of calories burned during the class, creating the ultimate workout.

Within the community of Orono, the vast majority of yoga enthusiasts have memberships to clubs. Of those OHS students who obtain memberships, CorePower Yoga in Minnetonka appears to be by far the most popular. The club offers a wide variety of nine different classes ranging from Yoga 1 to CoreCardio Circuit. However, for people who simply want to attend a class, an hour workout costs $18.

“I go to sculpt at CorePower typically 6 days a week. The classes are difficult because the room is at 100 degrees, which makes everything harder, but it is a really good workout,”said senior Lauren Shaw said.

Sculpt at CorePower torches calories. A typical class burns anywhere between 260 to 450 calories an hour, depending on the intensity level, according to Jake Wayne from Livestrong. The invigorating workout draws in members several times a week, but the sweltering 100 degree workout is not for everyone.

“I went to sculpt once during the free week trial that they offer and I never went back. It was so hot in there and I was sweating so much, it just wasn’t really my thing,” senior Sammy Patterson said.

Yet, for the yogis who love the heat and exercise, sculpt is a great way to get in shape and stay fit. Senior Alice Peterson and junior Emma Thomas became so enthralled in the practice of yoga that they dedicated themselves to become yoga instructors. The two decided to undergo the intensive five-week training course that consisted of learning the basic moves to assembling sequences for classes. The future instructors decided to persevere through the training at CorePower.

“I was always interested and knew I would eventually do it in or after college, but when this training came up, it was the perfect timing to go for it,” Peterson said.

On Feb. 9 the training for Peterson and Thomas finally came to end, the two however still had to complete the period of extension which is an additional week of training. The program allowed new yoga instructors to practice teaching in additional classes as well as learn new moves and workouts to add to sculpt sequences. Yet, the yoga instructors had completed the five agonizing weeks of training.

“The training is very difficult, but don’t give up. It can be frustrating at times, but you just have to keep your head up and keep practicing. It’s so worth it,” Thomas said.

Since yoga came into being 5,000 years ago, sculpt has become one of the most popular forms today. As the new fad has reached Orono, the healthy exercise serves as a beneficial outlet in aiding people to burn calories in a new way like never before.
