Over the Thanksgiving break the Orono Boys Basketball Team played in Monticello for a two game tournament. The first of the two games was on Friday Nov. 28 where the Spartans took on Chisago Lakes Area.
Spartans head coach Barry Wohler began the game with the same starters he had the first two games; sophomore Sam Sustacek, juniors Cole Hennings and Ethan Larson, seniors Andy Ten Eyck and Ben Turnham.
Hennings was the leading scorer with 15 points and was closely followed by Turnham who had 14. Ellis Hammer, junior, scored 10 points while Larson, Sustacek and senior Chandler Perry all had five points. This was Perry’s first game of the season after coming off of a preseason foot injury.
The Spartans outscored Chisago Lakes 73-58 after the two teams were tied 29-29 at halftime. The boys faced the Rocori Spartans next.
This was the first time the two teams had played each other since the 2013 sections when Orono Spartans rallied from behind to defeat the Rocori Spartans 54-52. Rocori was held to only 14 points each half and the Orono Spartans won 61-28.
Wohler stuck with the same starters; Sustacek, Hennings, Larson, Ten Eyck and Turnham. Sustacek scored 16 points, the most of the night for any Spartan. He was followed by Perry who had nine and Hennings with seven. The Spartans worked their record to 4-0 and look to face Bloomington Kennedy on Dec. 3 and St. Cloud Apollo on Dec. 5 both games will be played on visiting courts.
