As the the ‘60s came to a close and the hippies watched the world turn to the disco movement, they saw that not everyone still “loved the earth man.” The world industrialized and the focus was more on what is good for humans, not the earth.
In 1960 Gaylord Nelson, Wisconsin governor at the time, came up with the idea for a day of environmental awareness according to The Earth Day Network. Groups across the country came out to demonstrate for a clean, healthy environment. This was a rare issue that brought Democrats and Republicans together and led to many changes including Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts.
Throughout the years the focus of Earth Day has changed to make a push for changes on the major issues of today. Sustainable clean energy is a big focus on current Earth days along with Global Warming. Many climate change groups are hosting gatherings to get people aware of what is happening to our earth and what they can do to protect it.
Earth day is a great reminder that there is only one earth. Let’s protect it.
Treat Everyday like Earth Day
- Carpool! Its as easy as picking your friend up on the way to dinner or mall.
- Ditch the car all together. Especially this summer, hop on your bike and ride to your friends house. It’s better for you and the earth.
- Pick an alternative to single use plastic. Millions of pounds of single use plastic are thrown away each day. Next time you go out grab a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated in a better way. If you bring your own cup to most coffee shops they will give you some money off.
- Turn the lights out. It’s a no brainer to turn the lights off and unplug devices that you are not using. It will also save you some money.
- Follow the 3R’s. We’ve been taught to reduce, reuse and recycle since we could walk. It’s time to follow through. That shirt that is so last season, pass on to a younger sibling or friend.
- Plant your own garden. It’s a fun way to get outside and get your hands dirty. Along with getting some delicious veggies, it’s also healthier for the earth.
