It was a very successful season for the girls basketball team. They ended up getting third in the state tournament for class 3A. It was quite a turnaround from the previous season in which they finished with a winning percentage of 500.

The Orono Spartans Girls team finished with a record of 25-1 in the regular season and swept the section playoffs. Beating the likes of St. Cloud Apollo, Big Lake and Delano.

In the state tournament backed with awesome fan support the whole tournament, the girls earned a number one seed and blew out Thief River Falls. Senior Kiera Nelson led the charge with 18 points.

The next game the girls encountered the Tigers from Marshall. Orono quickly fell behind and trailed by 15 at halftime. The girls didn’t give up however, they went on a furious rally and ended up cutting down the lead of Marshall to only four points. Marshall didn’t let it get any closer though. Orono lost 55 to 48 and made it to the third place game.

Orono finished their season winning the third place game and ended up with a terrific season. Senior Rachel Heussner and junior Megan Mandel made the all-state tournament team.

Great season ladies!
