The Orono Boys Soccer season is in full swing! The team has experienced a lot of trials and tribulations over the past few weeks, but is fighting for a chance to make it to State.
Both senior goalkeeper Ellis Howe and senior captain Owen Throdahl suffered foot injuries and were in boots for a couple of weeks, making their reliability pretty shaky.
“It’s really brought the morale down, as those two really have a huge impact on our team, and not having them has caused our level to drop a little,” junior Evan Ward said.
Despite these setbacks, the team has managed to put together a remarkable season.
Their current record is 8-5-1. Their current home record is a comfortable 6-1, while their away record is 2-4-1. The boys are currently ranked 42nd in Minnesota and 1522nd in the nation.
Leading the offensive is senior Tiernan Bonner with 9 goals and 5 assists, closely followed by senior Captain Walter Cherwin with 7 goals and 5 assists. This is evidence of their outstanding playmaking abilities throughout the regular season.
This team is filled with a lot of potential and works hard for the entire 80 minutes on the turf. They are constantly looking to improve after every game and practice
With the regular season completed, the team has secured a spot in the section playoffs as the number two seed. The boys will have a chance to show their attributes and try to make it to the State Tournament.
“I think we can make it to State. We play Big Lake first, […] and then probably Delano in the section final. So we should be okay,” junior Teddy Prodahl said.
Big Lake is 0-6 overall and 0-3 in their conference, serving as one of the weakest teams that Orono is scheduled to face in Sections. For instance, Big Lake lost to Monticello 3-0, a team that the Spartans beat 6-0 earlier in the season.
The Spartans will play at home against Big Lake on Tuesday, October 7th, at 5 pm. With a win, they will play St. Francis or Becker at home on Thursday, October 9th, with the time yet to be determined.
