The Orono Debate Team is back for the new school year and excited for the season ahead! Following a multi-year hiatus due to COVID-19, the Orono Debate Team has reformed and is now looking forward to the 2025 season and seeking new members. Interested in joining? Here’s what you need to know.
How Debate Works
The Orono Debate Team participates in a type of debate called Classic Debate. In this format, one team of two people is assigned to the affirmative side of a topic, while the other team is assigned to the negative side. The affirmative and the negative teams then argue through the course of the debate, which usually lasts between 45 minutes and an hour, to try to sway the judge to their side and win the debate.
Students debate one topic for the first three debates of the season and one topic for the last four debates. The first topic this year is RESOLVED: Minnesota should legalize sports gambling. The second topic will be chosen after the first three debates.
“I’m pumped, psyched even,” Captain Simon Forbes said, “I just love gambling.”
Orono’s Schedule
The Debate Team meets twice weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays for about an hour and a half each time. Team members are also expected to work on their case outside of meetings.
“Outside of team meetings, case-writing and individual practice are heavily encouraged” Captain Owen Marks said.
Members are expected to participate in tournaments, of which there are seven, throughout the season.
Why Join Debate?
Being part of Debate helps develop skills that will help you in high school and beyond. You’ll learn to communicate arguments articulately and concisely. Throughout the season, you’ll have to respond to your opponents’ arguments, strengthening your ability to think and respond quickly, building confidence in the process. Being part of Debate can also strengthen your college applications.
“It is a great way to improve your research and argumentation skills, as well as public speaking and learning to think on your feet. It is also a good way to learn about current issues” Captain Keagan Klaers said.
