Tech giant Google announced on Jul. 17 that they will be replacing their popular file sharing application Google Drive with Google Backup and Sync on PC and Mac. Google Backup and Sync will include several improvements and features that build off of Google Drive.

Users of the Google Drive application have until Mar. 12, 2018 to move their files to Google Backup and Sync. After that date, the application will shut down, leaving users with no way to access their media on the app.

The main feature of the new application is an improved file protection service, and a faster and and easy to navigate layout. Essentially, Google is replacing the application form of Google Drive because the company feels that users’ files, photos, and videos will be better protected in the new app, according to Google.

Another new feature is the ability for users to store an unlimited number of photos to the app. If users want to upload their photos in original sizes and dimensions, then they will have to pay for extra storage.

Google Drive users will be able to download their Google account, photos and videos from their computers’ hard drive into Google Backup and Sync. One improvement is the ability for users to upload their media to the new application and keep them in a cloud, making it accessible on many different devices, according to Forbes

The change will not affect the browser version of Google Drive that many Orono students use almost every day. The change will only affect the downloadable Drive app that is available for PC and Mac. Students that do use the application form of Drive could benefit from the change’s features, according to Google.
