Every year or so there seems to be a new trend regarding how to change your figure quicker and easier. The most recent way: waist training. Recently, many major celebrities, like the Kardashians, have embraced and endorsed waist training products.
Waist training consists of wearing a corset-like belt around your waist. You can wear it as much as you want and is recommended to wear during meals and working out. Wearing a waist trainer is supposed to curb your appetite and give you that popular hourglass figure. The idea is the more that you wear it, the easier your figure will change.
Many companies like Waist Gang Society, Orchard Corset, Hourglass Express and Hourglass Angel have popped up and thrived because of the new trend.
It may seem intriguing, but how well does waist training actually work? Not that well, actually. Waist training, if anything, is only temporary.
The common misconception with wearing a waist trainer is that it will train your body to move fat to other places than your waist and stomach and permanently keep your waist trim. Though this is partly true, it is only applicable while wearing the waist trainer. The minute you take it off, fat will quickly return to those areas because that is how your body works and is meant to be.
Though waist training may look good on the outside, it’s not so great internally. According to Ph.D. Christopher Ochner, wearing a waist trainer frequently for long periods of time can start to shift your organs and create complications in digesting food.
Wearing a waist trainer also can make it hard to breath, and according to Ochner, some people have passed out after wearing them for a long period of time. Waist training can also weaken back muscles because a waist trainer doesn’t allow you to stimulate your muscles as well.
It’s easy to be envious of a figure like Kylie Jenner, 18, who also endorses waist trainers. Jenner is a social media icon that has some of the most followers on Instagram, SnapChat and Twitter. She is know for living a very lavish lifestyle and being one of the trendiest teens on the planet.
So when someone as famous and idolized as Jenner starts endorsing waist trainers it isn’t that hard to question whether wearing a 1500s-style corset is worth it.
It may seem quick and easy, but the truth about waist training is that it is only temporary and isn’t great for you. The best way to keep a trim waist would be watching your diet and making sure that you exercise regularly. But the better thing to do would be embracing your body no matter what you look like and trying to live a healthy lifestyle.
