Best of SNO is a website that features and showcases the work of student journalists from all around. Because it is so difficult for a student to have their work featured on Best of SNO, the OHS newspaper staff is proud to announce staff member Alec Morin’s achievement of having one of his submissions be selected to be featured on the site.
“It feels great to have one of my articles be selected to be featured on Best of Sno,” Morin said. “It’s nice to be recognized on a national site, especially because I didn’t expect my article to be read past the Orono community.”
Board v. Ministry of Education is the title of Morin’s article that was featured on Best of SNO. The article is about unfairly comparing American and Chinese international standardized test scores and how the Chinese educational system is much too rigorous to fairly be compared to ours.
“I started the article because Mrs. Herring wanted me to,” Morin said, “but I guess I ended up being pretty passionate about the subject considering I have a great respect for our educational system and the Chinese government officials devaluing my education bothers me.”
Being selected to be featured on Best of SNO is an achievement in itself, however, Morin achieved this honor on his very first submission to the program. In addition to this, although Morin has been on Newspaper for three years now, he has had no other writing experience besides for montage, making his achievement especially impressive.
“Alec is one of those rare students who takes on journalistic writing with zeal. He was able to take this new writing style and make it his own; it’s as if he was an experienced journalistic writer from the beginning,” Journalism teacher Kyle Herring said. “You can tell he enjoys writing about world events and he is very good at taking serious issues and translating them for everyone to understand, while still making them interesting for everyone to read.”
