Freedom of choice is one of the most treasured freedoms in the United States. Sometimes that freedom is over stretched to the point where others could be hurt by that decision.
Measles is still common in certain parts of the world including Europe, Asia and Africa. People who are not vaccinated from those regions or the United States could bring in Measles.
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), from Jan. first and Jan. 30, 102 people from 14 different states were reported to have Measles. On Jan. 23 the CDC issued a Health Alert due to Measles.
The CDC has noted that of the 102 people who did get Measles, the vast majority were not vaccinated. The CDC has not yet release the exact number of people not vaccinated, this is in order to protect patient confidentiality.
The majority of the cases have been linked to an amusement park in Calif. The Calif. Department of Public Health (CDPH) confirmed that between Dec. 31 of 2014 and Jan. 21, a total of 59 cases of Measles have been reported. Ages range between seven months old and 70 years old. Of the 59 cases 42 have been linked to popular amusement parks such as Disneyland.
Vaccination status was document by the CDPH in 34 of 59 cases. Of those 34 people 28 had not been vaccinated. One person only had one dose of the vaccine. Five people had two or more doses of the vaccine, but not all.
