Alt-J released their second album, “This is All Yours” on Sept 22.
They are known for their incomparable style that their first album, “An Awesome Wave,” gave them in 2012. Fans are calling it “folktronica.” This style continues into their new album with lead singer Joe Newman’s unique voice, but with a change of instruments brings a slight change to their previous music.
Three songs were released as singles before the entire album was released.
“Hunger of the Pine” was the first song to be released on June 19. This song has a more “techno” feel to it than what Alt-J has done before. It even samples a line from Miley Cyrus.
The second song to be released, “Left Hand Free,” was released on July 15. This song has a bluesy guitar riff that repeats throughout and it’s definitely different than any other song they’ve done.
“Every Other Freckle” was the third and last single to be released on Aug. 13. Out of the three singles, this is more similar to their previous style, but with an added grunge feel towards the end.
Those three singles are the most upbeat and different songs in the album. A majority of the rest are more soothe and calming,
On their previous album, they had a song titled “Bloodflood,” and this album includes a song titled “Bloodflood, Pt. II.” It borrows some of the same lyrics and rhythms, but adds that new, more alternative sound this entire album has.
Throughout the album, there are references to a place called Nara in the songs “Arrival In Nara,” “Nara,” and lastly, “Leaving Nara.”
The bonus track of the album, “Lovely Day,” is a good last song of the album with its psychedelic feel.
Just like their previous album, this creates a different kind of genre, mixing many sounds from folk, rock, electronic, and indie music.
