Decapitations, blood strewn paste and graphic mutilation, this is a good game. Those wonderful features and much more can be found in the new sequel to the third person, sci-fi horror, survival game Dead Space 2. This game is nothing but a constant adrenaline rush, full of startling moments- I even recall screaming at the television in some instances- but all moments were enjoyable, nonetheless.
The story takes place three years since the events of the first game and the protagonist Issac Clarke is one of the most unlucky guys in the Galaxy. He walks into a space station called “The Sprawl” and finds it crawling with the same enemy from the first game, the necromorphs. These creatures are corpses of the dead populace, revived and transformed into terrifying zombie like beings because of a mysterious extraterrestrial infection.
Issac has already had experience with taking care of these guys so he is the right man for the job. Right away he is fighting his way through hordes of necromorphs and for early gamers this can seem quite frightening. But the unique way of playing becomes routine after awhile.
Dead Space is unique for its way of simply killing the enemies. Instead of the standard head shot that millions of gamers are already use to, the only way to kill necromorphs is dismembering the limbs. At first this seems kind of odd but with a little practice it becomes natural and very entertaining.
The game play is simply a lot smoother in this game compared to the first. The improvements to the melee attacks making it quicker and more natural then its predecessor. Reloading was a problem with the first game too, instead of doing a weired button combo it is now simply the x button which gives more time for dismemberment. Also right away the game gives a telekinesis power to Issac, this simple feature lets Issac grab things around the room with the push of a button. It is much more convenient then running around the room picking up every little bit of ammo.
There are more customisable options and improvements too with the armor and guns. Instead of just looking cool the armor now gives special unique perks that fit a multitude of players needs. All the guns from the first game make a return and with some added improvements they are more fun and deadly then ever.
There is also a crazy feature that even the most brazened of gamers would have trouble with an option of difficulty called hardcore mode. It is hardcore to the highest degree enemies are the toughest, supplies are scarce, no checkpoints, if you die you go back to your last save but you can only save three times. Seems pretty crazy to me but a challenge is what gamers look for.
What I did not enjoy about the game was the style of progression that it has. The whole game is people telling Issac to do this and Issac to do that, there is not much choice throughout the game besides what gun to use and the linear storyline feeling can get tiresome after a few levels.
Dead Space 2 is a game that gives you your own personal haunted house right in your living room. It is frightening, entertaining, and just a ball. I give dead space a 9 out of 10. I would have liked to see a more in depth story as I am more accustomed to playing, but the mindless mutilation can go on for hours. Dead Space 2 is rated M for mature and is in stores now.
