It started in August 2010 when the girls volleyball team became involved with 363. The team made 1,500 sandwiches that were delivered that night. 363 is a local organization that was started by Allen Law, a retired Minneapolis teacher. 363 strives to help the homeless receive a meal 363 days a year. Organizations across the state put together Thanksgiving and Christmas meals for the homeless, but 363 wants to help them out the other 363 days of the year.
Seniors Carly Juve, Erin Lucas, and Jena Chuba have continued to work with 363 and made sandwiches for the homeless in Minneapolis and across the state. They have also turned this into their DECA project. The girls wanted to get the whole community involved with their project. “We are hoping that these young leaders will realize the impact they have made on our community and continue to use the 363 program in the future,” explained Juve.
On Feb. 3 Juve, Lucas, Chuba, and other members of the DECA program made their way to the middle school. That day, DECA students and OMS students made and packed sandwiches to be delivered. The day started off well but they realized very quickly that they were running out of sandwich meat.
Seniors Stefano Rosati, Sam Persian, and Brian Urness made a quick run to Cub Foods and Village Meats to keep the process going. A total of 10,000 ham and cheese sandwiches were made by the students. “Over all I think that the project was a success and we hope that the school continues to be involved with 363 in the future,” explained Lucas.
After the packing was over, Juve, Lucas and Chuba helped deliver the sandwiches to local food shelves and other organizations. “The 10,000 sandwiches were divided up between the local food shelves, Interfaith Outreach, Hanover Food Shelf, Dorthy Day Food Shelf and 363 Organization,” stated Juve.
Juve, Lucas and Chuba will present their project at the state conference, March 4th-8th. They hope to place high enough to make it to the national conference that will be held in Orlando, FL.
Good luck to all DECA Dogs competing at the state conference!
