James ‘Whitey’ Bulger, 84, was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday, according to an Associated Press Breaking News alert.
In the 70’s and 80’s, Bulger went on murderous reigns of terror as a part of what journalists call ‘The Winter Hill Gang.’
According to the AP, Bulger was the inspiration for the sinister character in Jack Nicholson’s 2006 movie, “The Departed” who “bought Thanksgiving turkeys for working-class South Boston residents and kept hard drugs out of the neighborhood.” His image was ruined, though, when authorities began to dig up dead bodies 10 years ago.
Bulger was protected by corrupt Boston FBI officials for years, including former Boston FBI agent John Connolly Jr. who was sentenced to 40 years in prison for helping Bulger’s gang murder a businessman in 2008.
Bulger was sentenced by Judge Denise J. Casper for 11 killings and other racketeering charges to two life terms plus five years of imprisonment. He was also ordered to pay $19 million in restitution for victims.
