The 12/12/12 concert in Madison Square Garden, New York was a benefit concert to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Sandy’s destruction  in New York this winter.

The money, over $30 million on ticket sales alone, is raised by the Robin Hood Relief Fund. This charity provided many necessities to people in need after the storm. The relief funds they raise from this concert will go to various community non-profit groups serving the Sandy victims that work through the Robin Hood Foundation.

Among the musicians raising money were Sir Paul McCartney, Roger Waters, Jon Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Bruce Springsteen, The Who, Kanye West, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, as well as a humorous appearance and parody rendition by Adam Sandler. Comedians Billy Crystal and Chris Rock also joined in the night’s entertainment, with talk show hosts Jimmy Fallon, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.

These big names in rock-and-roll and television were recruited by the Robin Hood Foundation to attract an audience that would give the most benefit to the fund. Many songs were performed and the artists expressed their love for the city of New York and their sadness over its destruction. Homages to the city were paid with songs like “Empire State of Mind”, by Alicia Keys, “My City in Ruins”,  by Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel’s classic “Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)” and “New York State of Mind.”
