On Sunday, September 28th, the Minnesota Vikings suffered a tough loss against the Pittsburgh Steelers, falling 21-24, leaving Vikings fans with somber feelings as they head into their season.
The Vikings scored just 6 points in the first three quarters, while the Steelers jumped ahead with 21. In the fourth quarter, Minnesota’s offense finally came alive, posting 15 points. However, a field goal from Pittsburgh made a comeback difficult. With only 1 minute and 10 seconds left, Minnesota needed a flawless drive. Instead, they drew multiple penalties, and the Steelers’ defense shut down their last chance to win.
“We have to improve and continue to grow… but it’s also about the plays that precede them. We need to be efficient and stay on schedule to get the ball to our playmakers,” Head Coach Kevin O’Connell commented, reflecting on the loss.
Minnesota’s defense allowed the Steelers to score 24 points; the Vikings were unable to stop key plays, most notably when Steelers wide receiver #4 D.K. Metcalf broke free for an 80-yard touchdown, highlighting lapses in coverage.
“We hold ourselves to certain standards. And you’ve got a guy like Aaron Rodgers just sitting back there and controlling the game off running the ball … we’ve gotta be better.” #44 Safety Joshua Metellus said on the need to improve run defense and limit Rodgers’ control of the game.
Next week, the Minnesota Vikings will play against the Cleveland Browns in London, which promises to be an engaging game. Both the Vikings and the Browns have strong defenses, but their offenses are questionable because of their lackluster performance in their previous matchups. This matchup will be a favorable opportunity to see how Minnesota can redeem itself after a lackluster performance this week. Be prepared to watch another game in the early morning at 8:30 am.
