On April 4th, Warner Bros. released A Minecraft Movie, with a budget of $150 million. The film features Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Jennifer Coolidge, and Sebastian Hansen.
The movie has been a major financial success, making $313 million worldwide on its opening weekend, shattering box office expectations and becoming the highest-grossing opening weekend for a video game adaptation.
Despite this, critics were unimpressed by the film, awarding it a 48% rating on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer. Fans, however, loved A Minecraft Movie, giving it an 86% rating on the Rotten Tomatoes Popcorn Meter.
The movie starts with protagonists Garret “The Garbage Man” (played by Jason Momoa), Natalie (played by Emma Myers), Dawn (played by Danielle Brooks), and Henry (played by Sebastian Hansen), who are dealing with ordinary life problems when they are suddenly taken into the Overworld. Zombies attack them, but Steve (played by Jack Black) comes to their rescue.
They embark on a quest to help Steve fight the piglins in the Nether and save the Overworld. Meanwhile, our villain, the piglin Malgosha, tries to steal the orb of dominance, take all the gold from the Overworld, and end all creativity.
The plot is missing some key elements in a story, such as character development, main villains, and an ending. Still, the fun of the movie is viewers’ reactions to moments in the movie, like when Steve says, “Chicken Jockey,” and audiences erupt with loud cheers, clapping, and throwing food around the movie theater. This has sparked some backlash against audience behavior, with people saying that this kind of reaction is unacceptable. As with “I am Steve” and other Steve quotes, moviegoers responded with screaming, passion, and clapping that was unmatched by any movie I had seen before.
A Minecraft movie is something special for both previous and new Minecraft players; even people who have not played Minecraft will like to see this movie and enjoy it. Overall, we give the movie an 8/10 for an enjoyable experience.
