A strong batch of spring storms is predicted to blow into southern Minnesota on Thursday afternoon, causing outdoor sporting events such as the home track & field meet to be canceled.
According to a Hazardous Weather Outlook issued early Thursday morning by the National Weather Service office in Chanhassen, there exists a likely possibility of scattered thunderstorms developing later in the day with several opportunities to become severe. The main threats are large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rain. Though less likely, a brief tornado is not out of the realm of possibility either.
Orono is among the communities in the alert area, which includes central and southern Minnesota and part of west-central Wisconsin. The storms are expected to form this afternoon and continue well into tonight, coincidentally lining up with the time frame of the track meet.
With recent news, Athletic Director Paul Brunner announced all outside sporting events are canceled for the day. Currently, the track & field meet has been canceled, while the boys tennis and softball games have been postponed to a later date. The boys volleyball game is still scheduled for 8 pm tonight due to the indoor nature of the event.
Whether you’re sitting at home or driving to the boys volleyball game, keep your eyes peeled for the skies and be sure to stay safe.
