10 Orono students are competing in the 44th annual Congressional Art Competition.
The Congressional Art Competition is a yearly contest sponsored by the Congressional Institute, where students in each Congressional district submit pieces of art to be judged by their representative.
“It’s a nationwide high school arts competition sponsored by members of the US House of Representatives,” Art teacher Dr. Gamble said.
The creator of the top piece in each district has their piece hung in the Cannon Tunnel in the Capitol Rotunda for 1 year and receives a trip to Washington D.C. to attend the Winners’ Celebration.
“The winner […] and a guardian [will be flown] out to Washington D.C and put their piece on display in the Capitol Rotunda,” Dr. Gamble said.
The district that students compete in is dependent on where they live, not where they attend school.
9 of the students will be showcasing their pieces in the District 3 art show from 6-7:30 pm on Thursday, April 17th at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts, where newly-elected representative Kelly Morrison will decide on the top piece.
The other student, Daria Mayo, will have her artwork judged by representative Betty McCollum in the District 4 art show at the Atrium Gallery of the Schmidt Artist Lofts as a component of the 2025 Spring Saint Paul Art Crawl from Friday, April 25 to Sunday, April 27th.
