On Saturday President Donald Trump declared that America would be imposing new tariffs on Canadian, Mexican, and Chinese imports, but on Monday, declared he would pause these tariffs for one month on the neighboring countries.
This past Saturday, February 1st, President Trump signed an executive order that would have implemented a 25% tariff on America’s neighbors, Mexico and Canada on Tuesday, February 4th, while also implementing a 10% tariff on imported goods from China. This act was in response to the flow of fentanyl and illegal immigrants through America’s borders.
Following, negotiations with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, America’s neighbors agreed on temporary solutions to stop the flow of fentanyl and illegal immigrants. Prime Minister Trudeau has since created a $1.3 billion dollar plan to secure the border between the U.S. and Canada. President Sheinbaum also agreed to place 10,000 Mexican Troops along America’s southern border.
Prior to the pause, the three countries vowed retaliatory measures. Canada promised to implement retaliatory tariffs, and Mexico promised other countermeasures, according to CNN.
Unlike the tariffs on Canada and Mexico, the tariffs on China were not paused. China responded with retaliatory tariffs on American goods.
