The National Weather Service has issued a cold weather advisory in our area, effective from 9 pm Saturday, January 18th to noon Tuesday, January 20, 2025. Temperatures are plummeting, with wind chills to reach as low as -35°F. Here is what this means and how you can stay safe in these extreme conditions.
What is a Cold Weather Advisory?
A Cold Weather Advisory is issued when dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills are coming. These can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes and can also cause hypothermia. Frostbite can cause permanent damage to the skin and Limbs. Hypothermia can be a fatal condition that happens when a person loses heat faster than the body can produce. This advisory warns all people to take precautions, especially when outdoors.
Who Is Affected?
This advisory impacts central, east-central, south-central, and southeast Minnesota and northwest and west central Wisconsin, including our Orono community. It is crucial to prioritize safety when heading to school, work, or participating in outdoor activities.
Staying Safe in the Cold
Here are some tips to protect yourself and others during this advisory:
1. Dress Warmly and in Layers
-Wear insulated, windproof outerwear.
-Layer to capture warmth, and wear moisture-wicking material for a dry skin environment.
-Don’t forget a hat, gloves, scarf, and warm socks, most of the body’s heat is lost through areas without protection.
2. Limit Outdoor Time
-Avoid spending extended time outdoors, when possible.
– Stay in heated areas and take frequent breaks to warm up if you must be outdoors.
3. Watch for Frostbite and Hypothermia
– Signs of frostbite include numbness, white or grayish skin, with a waxy texture.
– Hypothermia symptoms include shivering, confusion, slurred speech, and drowsiness. Seek immediate medical attention if these occur.
4. Be Prepared for Emergencies
– Keep an emergency kit with blankets, water, and snacks in your vehicle, just in case you end up stranded during winter.
These bitter weather conditions call for some simple preparation to ensure everyone’s safety. Dress warmly, minimize the time spent outdoors, and be prepared for whatever can happen.
With just a little planning, we can all deal with these chilly days with much more safety and comfort.
