Many people have noticed an overwhelming amount of Jjuniors who have been assigned spots in the senior lot, while many Seniors have been placed in the OK-Kids lot across the street from the High School.
In the past at OHS, there have been unofficial “official” parking lots for certain grades, positioning the Sophomores in the Ice rink and Middle School lots, juniors in the North and Activity Center lots, leaving the seniors the “senior lot” or High School lot. This year there seems to be a lot more commotion when it comes to who parks where.
Senior Eshaan Ambrose is assigned a spot in the OK Kids lot.
“I understand that legally it’s not called the Senior Lot, but, I feel we [seniors] get very few privileges embedded into the school’s administration,” Ambrose said.
Ambrose is not the only person who has expressed their feelings on the parking situation, on August 26th, shortly after students started picking up their parking pass from the main office, senior Nico Andrade sent a text to the Orono Class of 2025 GroupMe, offering up his OK-Kids pass for a Senior Pass.
“I knew I wasn’t going to walk across the street in the middle of winter,” Andrade said.
According to the GroupMe and Andrade, in the end he found someone to take up his offer and traded his OK-Kids lot pass for $150 with another fellow senior classmate.
While seniors are showing their frustration and working around not having a spot in the Senior Lot, juniors are enjoying their time with their new found parking freedom.
“I feel bad for the seniors, but they had 2 days to sign up before juniors got let in,” junior Lindy Keto said.
Keto’s thoughts put more perspective into the fact seniors did have the opportunity to sign up for a spot before other grades.
On August 8th, Dr. Steiner sent out an email with back to school information including information on parking. The email states that parking is on a first- come, first -serve basis and the cut off for seniors to sign up for the High School Lot would be on August 14th at 9 pm, after that they would open up registration to juniors.
Although it has been found to be frustrating for the seniors not having seniority over the parking spaces in the Senior Lot, there are measures they can take to prevent their parking frustration, and can use their experience to spread the word to future seniors to make sure they sign up for a parking pass before the deadline.
