Do you have a problem with your phone? Do you need help setting up your new computer? If so, then check out one of OHS’ newer programs, Orono Tech Buddies!
Tech Buddies, which began last year, is a group that meets on the fourth Thursday of each month from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. to help local community members with technology-related concerns. Community members receive one-on-one support with an OHS student in the Activities Center classroom.
“[This] could be like adding a contact to their phone, or organizing their email, or connecting their Bluetooth speaker to whatever system,” Tech Buddies advisor Genna Torney said.
Tech Buddies provides an excellent opportunity for community members, especially older adults, to receive technology assistance and become more integrated in the Orono community.
“Community members should go to Tech Buddies because it creates a bond between [them and] the community and is a great way to get tech help,” Tech Buddies leader Sophie Middleton said.
Tech Buddies is also a great way for students to connect with people of older ages.
“Students should participate [in Tech Buddies] because it’s a great way to volunteer in the community and get to know other generations,” Middleton said.
Tech Buddies is currently seeking more student volunteers. Students get to miss school to volunteer and it is a great opportunity to help the community. If you would like to volunteer, please follow this link and fill out the form.
“It’s a great way to connect with community members and give back, and it’s a nice group for people that are interested in technology,” Ms. Torney said.
Tech Buddies also offered Summer programs for students, explained Ms. Torney.
“There were some paid Tech Buddies internship positions during the summer […] to help set up classrooms and help with our media center classes,” Ms. Torney said.
