This month, members of all three high school bands will be professionally recording some of their best work to be made into a CD. The recording will take place on Mar. 20, and each band will record for twenty minutes. It takes about an hour to record ten minutes of music, what with editing, various takes and splicing.
“I think it might be a little hard because both songs that we’re recording we haven’t really played in a while, but it’s nice that we can re-record as many sections as we need to,” said freshman Mallory Dudra, a member of wind ensemble.
“Both pieces we’re recording, “Second Suite in F” by Gustav Holst and “Give Us This Day” by David Maslanka, take a huge amount of effort for every player in the band, so it will be interesting to see how we do. Playing those pieces for two hours won’t be easy,” said sophomore Grace Knudsen. Aside from the challenge, students are excited to be given this opportunity.
This is a unique project that the school has never undertaken before. Senior David Williams said, “The project is a great opportunity. Not only do we get a chance to be professionally recorded, but being able to hear ourselves on a CD is a fantastic way to learn about what we need to improve on musically as a group.”
However, being recorded professionally can be a somewhat intimidating experience. “I’m sure everyone will be pretty nervous at first, but the man doing the recording is apparently a pretty funny guy. He’ll joke around and put the kids at ease,” said Orono High School band director Timothy Arnold.
“It sounds like it’s supposed to be a really good experience,” said senior Maggie Ellis. The CD will be available for purchase through the band office, and will cost $20.00. The band will also be putting on the Pops concert tomorrow, Mar. 17, at 6:30 p.m.
