Two Orono juniors, Adam Bergh and Brady Koetting, have created an experiment that maps out what women find attractive in men, and have just recently finalized the results of their endeavor. Bergh and Koetting surveyed several Orono High School students in order to collect data for the project, using ranking systems and photos in order to determine what the most attractive quality in a man really is.

Bergh, Koetting, Jake Geiger, Eric Bakken and sophoore Ben Banavige came up with the idea when wondering about the rating systems that exist currently. Keotting elaborated that “in a normal rating system, guys rate girls on a scale of one to ten, so we wanted to know how girls rated guys and what the criteria for an attractive guy was.”

In order to collect data for the experiment, Bergh and Koetting created a multi-part survey that includes a ranking system that asks girls to rank several factors in order of importance when considering how “hot” a guy is. Some of the attributes that were ranked include: height, eyes, smile, hair color, hair length, weight, tan and muscles. The second part of the survey asked the participants to look at several photos of men and list which of the previously mentioned attributes positively or negatively affected the man’s attractiveness.

The surveys included photos of Hugh Laurie, Keanu Reeves, Jon Hamm and many other men. The creators of the survey attempted to choose a wide variety of males with several different distinguishing features in order to obtain the most balanced results possible.

Once the surveys were created, they were distributed by the group to several different girls in the school. Survey taker Kelsey Longe says that “they distributed the surveys to several different groups of girls, and kept the results from each group separate so they could compare between groups.” Longe added that to her “a man is a package deal, and no one trait is the most important.” Bergh and Koetting are considering creating a revised version of the survey in order to get more data, but as of now, the group is content with the results.

The data was then collected and tallied in order to figure out what truly makes a male attractive. The results were surprisingly different than what the creators believed they would be. The number one thing girls find in attractive males is good eyes, while the second is a good smile, opposing the group’s hypothesis. Bergh stated that “girls didn’t take as much not to muscular arms and such: things that you can have control over, but were more interested in the facial features that you can’t control.”

On the overwhelming majority of the surveys, girls put eyes and smile as either their first or second choice for the most attractive quality in a guy. According to the results of the experiment, some of the least important qualities in a man were broadness of shoulders and hair color.

When the group created the surveys, they did not account personality into them. The group wanted to “recreate a sort of first impression type thing, what a girl notices about a guy right away,” stated Bergh. Paul Brauchle, another Junior involved in the experiment feels like “the results did not show what girls would actually say in person,” but what their first impression of a guy actually was.

The group’s results will be published on their website, but mainly created the project just out of personal interest and a desire to inform mankind on the nature of women.
