Spring is in full-bloom at OHS, which means that the Spring Play is in-the-works!
This year, OHS Drama Presents: Steel Magnolias.
Steel Magnolias is a 1989 comedy-drama film based on a play written by Robert Harling. The original play portrayed experiences of the family and friends of the playwright, Harling.
Set in the small southern town of Chinquapin Parish, the story follows a group of women who bond during their hair appointments at their local beauty shop.
“The story centers around M’Lynn and her daughter Shelby. The narrative of their lives unfolds and takes the audience on a journey through success, heartbreak and friendship,” Theatre Educator Mrs. Balon Peck said.
The Orono Drama Program produces three shows each school year: a Fall Musical, a Winter Competitive One Act and a Spring Play. Rehearsals for the Spring Play start mid-February and are every day after school.
“We’ve really cultivated a space of learning and community. I know that the department will uphold this and continue to get bigger and better,” Assistant Director and Senior Lauren Dock said.
Many hours of work go into the rehearsal process, set-building, tech and costumes.
“The crew has been a well-oiled machine in terms of staying on top of scene changes, costuming and all of the paperwork that goes into a play. There are some pretty fun little moments in the play, both acting and tech-wise, that I’m excited for audiences to see,” Balon Peck said.
The supportive and fun environment for the students, led by Ms. Balon Peck can be clearly seen in the tremendous work that is produced.
“The rehearsal process is silly and creative, and the performances are so rewarding and seeing everyone work together to create a show is incredibly cool,” Dock said.
