On February 7th the NFL championship game was held in Tampa, Florida on Buccaneer turf making this year’s Superbowl an exciting home game against the Kansas City Chiefs. With just under 100 million viewers, we watched Tom Brady take on Patrick Mahomes in a gripping championship game that would soon turn into a blowout.
By halftime, the Buccaneers were up 21-6 as Mahome’s disastrous night continued to look less and less likely towards keeping his winning streak in the Superbowl championship game. After a rocky first quarter fans were greeted with a stunning performance by The Weekend where he played his most famous songs while illuminated by bright lights. On top of a glorious performance on stage, backup dancers took over the entire 100-yard football field to end his halftime show.
By the end of the third quarter, Kansas City’s defense proved costly as Gronkowski and Brady demonstrated to be an unstoppable duo on the offensive line. Gronkowski who came out of retirement this season to play for Tampa Bay with Tom Brady did not fail to pick back up his once magnificent tight end skills.
By the fourth quarter, desperation had set in for the Kansas City Chiefs. After a blow to the head by Tampa Bay Defense, Mahomes walked across the field dizzy and defeated. This was the first game in Patrick Mahomes career he has lost in the double digits as the fourth quarter ended with a score of 31-9. Although a tough loss, the quarterback gave a humbling speech after the game explaining his loss was him learning.
One of the most exhilarating parts of the Superbowl each year is the dozens of different bets that can be placed on the game. An estimated 4.3 billion dollars was expected to be placed for the 2021 Superbowl Championship game. Many Orono Highschool students placed bets on the two teams this February.
“My friend Joe won 500 hundred dollars from the Superbowl game. He won his money by placing it on Tampa Bay to win the game and Rob Gronkowski to catch 6 passes. My other friend Jack lost just over 100 dollars betting -3 on the chiefs,” Orono alumnus Michael Hughes said.
The Buccaneers recently celebrated their exciting win by hosting a boat parade on Hillsborough River near downtown Tampa. Tom Brady was seen grinning after winning his 7th super bowl ring following Gronkowski in the next boat over.
