Last year, the Orono Junior Gold Boys hockey team drew the attraction of the crowds during their season. The late-night games, close friends and exciting hockey had many people showing up in the stands cheering on their team. The games were full of penalties and fighting, and the team developed a cult-like following among the high school boys.
“We’re still building chemistry and getting better each game. So far we’ve played well against tough teams and have had a few wins. I’m looking forward to the home games and seeing a huge student section rooting for the boys,” senior Will Buck said.
This year the team started their season in December with away games in Forest Lake and St. Michael. This Wednesday, Dec. 18th Orono played Edina at home, and it was a neck and neck game. The crowd was small but loud and the tension was visible on the ice. Orono lost five to four with two minutes left due to the rink closing, things like this happen and fans have come to expect the unexpected.
“It was a hard fought battle, we had too many penalties and not enough cellys, but we’re excited to get back on the ice,” senior Ethan Kringen said.
This year familiar faces such as seniors Will Buck, Ethan Kringen and Bobby McCrea among others made their reappearance on the team. Seniors Mason Thedens, Connor Anderson and Sam Christiansen joined the boys and are generating buzz throughout the school on their unexpected return to hockey.
“Junior gold is special because of how powerful the student section is. The games are scheduled late so everyone can make it. Our cheering is loud and eccentric, we evoke fear into the opposing team while hyping up our own players,” senior Jack Welch said.
With a long season ahead, everyone is looking forward to many more games and memories made. Show up to the Morrison Ice Arena to join the fun, Orono plays Prior Lake on Sunday at 6:45.
