This year the American Music Awards took place on November 28, 2019. The hosting responsibilities this year fell upon Ciara as she was the emcee of the award show. The opening performance of “Lose you to Love Me” and “Look at Her Now” by Selena Gomez captivated the audience. These songs are from her upcoming album that will be released on January 10, 2020. Before performing, Gomez had a panic attack since she had not performed in two years and wanted the performance to go well.

“I heard that Selena had a panic attack before the show but was still able to deliver a good performance even though she had a bad moment,” said senior Taylor Schmidt.

Billie Eilish entertained the audience by performing her hit song “All the Good Girls Go to Hell”. As she performed, the flames in the background became intense each time she sang the chorus. Eilish was nominated for six awards, she ended up winning an award for favorite artist in alternative rock and new artist of the year.

One of the anticipated performances this year was by Taylor Swift as she did a medley of her songs. Her performance started with the song “The Man” while wearing a shirt that displayed all the names of her albums. Swift then transitioned to songs such as “Love Story”, “I Knew You Were Trouble”, “Blank Space” and lastly finished off with her recent hit “Lover”. While Swift was performing “Shake it off”, she was accompanied by Halsey and Camila Cabello.

Taylor put on a captivating performance and took us through her decade of hits and with her master showmanship showed us why she was crowned artist of the decade.

Swift was nominated for six awards this year and won in each of those categories. The categories were artist of the decade, favorite music video, favorite female artist in pop, favorite album in pop, favorite artist and artist of the decade. A memorable moment of the night was when Swift received an award for artist of the decade by Carole King. In her speech, she thanked Carole King, singer and songwriter, for being an inspiration to her growing up. Swift currently holds the most American Music Awards with 28 awards, therefore surpassing Michael Jackson who had 24 awards.

Overall, the American Music Awards did not disappoint this year. The show contained many artists and performances that were highly anticipated by audiences. The show allowed fans to choose winners since they are able to vote for their favorite artist or band in each category. The tickets for next year’s American Music Awards are already ready for purchase and is anticipated to be on November 22, 2020.
