Heavy, fluffy, and large flaked snow arrived on April 13 and didn’t show signs of slowing down until the afternoon of April 15.
15 inches of snow fell on the ground in the Twin Cities, according to The National Weather Service. In the metro area, Maple Grove got hit with the most snow, getting 22 inches. Orono received 11 inches of snow on April 14 and another three inches on April 15, according to AccuWeather.
Strong winds got up to 70 miles per hour, frozen rain, and small pea sized hail hit southwestern Minnesota, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, according to Weather.
Many schools and flights were either cancelled or delayed. 750 flights were canceled through the dates April 13-15 at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport, according to CBS Minnesota. St. Paul, Minneapolis, Anoka-Hennepin, Osseo, and Stillwater schools were cancelled on April 16.Orono and Hopkins were delayed two hours, according to Southwest Minneapolis Patch.
The Twin Cities set an all time record for biggest snowstorm in April, according to The National Weather Service. A total of 26 inches of snow covered the ground. The biggest snowstorm that has been recorded was the Halloween storm that occurred in 1991. This storm brought 28 inches of snow in the Twin Cities, according to CBS Minnesota.
