On April 6, a junior hockey team from a small town in Saskatchewan was on their way to their playoff game in Nipawin. There were 29 people on board the bus including players, coaches, staff and drivers. The bus and almost half of the people on board never made it to their playoff game.
The bus was hit by a semi-truck, killing 16 members and putting 13 in critical condition. The crash happened around 5 p.m. on Saskatchewan Highway 35, Canada. Both the truck and the bus flipped on their sides from the extreme force of the crash. Some of the victims were transported to the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. Three helicopters and four air ambulances helped transport the victims.
Five days after the crash, the team’s athletic therapist, Dayna Brons, passed away. She was severely injured during the crash suffering from severe trauma to her head. Before Brons passed she went through two surgeries.
The crash rocked the entire country, as well as the United States. Tweets were sent out by the goalie of the Edmonton Oilers, President Donald Trump and the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau.
